Slough House

Slow Horses / C14

Chapter 14

Book 1 Part Two 3741 words POV: River Cartwright, Curly, Louisa Guy, Jackson Lamb, Hassan Ahmed

Summary

Before dawn the slow horses gather at Blake’s grave in Bunhill Fields, a locked cemetery Lamb can open with a key. River Cartwright arrives alone, having failed to collect Kay White — she was already being driven away — and reports no sign of Struan Loy. Min Harper, Louisa Guy and Roderick Ho climb in; Ho boots up his laptop, and they agree the Dogs blame them for Jed Moody and that the Service is setting them up. Lamb arrives with Catherine Standish, eating a bacon sandwich, and lays out the frame: Alan Black was recruited by Diana Taverner for a kidnapping that was meant to be staged and is now real, so Taverner needs scapegoats. Hassan Ahmed is the nephew of Mahmud Gul, a hardline general in Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, and Taverner’s plan was to rescue him and bank the favour; now, within a day, British intelligence will have killed a friendly power’s Second Desk’s nephew on camera. River remembers where he saw Black and tells them, and Lamb takes only him: they drive to Slough House to learn whether Moody’s body is still there, Lamb telling the rest they are useless and can do as they like. Catherine tells the abandoned team to stop hunting Hassan and start thinking like Black, and they head for a café on Old Street.

Beats

  • C14S01 · River Cartwright — At Blake’s grave River reports Kay White taken and Loy missing; Min, Louisa and Ho arrive convinced the Dogs blame them, and Lamb appears with a key.
  • C14S02 · Curly — Curly, driving lost through London with Hassan in the boot, decides Larry is a coward and that they must get out of the city.
  • C14S03 · Louisa Guy — Lamb reveals Black was Taverner’s plant, Hassan is Mahmud Gul’s nephew, and the botched rescue now needs Slough House as scapegoats.
  • C14S04 · River Cartwright — Starving and exhausted, River fixes on Sid’s shooting and Taverner’s reason for planting her on him, and something clicks into place.
  • C14S05 · Jackson Lamb — Lamb argues the leaderless kidnappers will cling to Black’s blueprint and tells the team to think as Black would; River says he remembers where he saw him.
  • C14S06 · Hassan — In the boot Hassan relives Moe’s head on the kitchen table, loses the last of his will, and stops being a person.
  • C14S07 · Jackson Lamb — River’s information is heard in silence; Lamb calls them all useless, takes only River, and leaves the others to prove him wrong.
  • C14S08 · River Cartwright — Lamb denies winding them up, then drives River to Slough House to find out whether Moody’s body has been removed.
  • C14S09 · Louisa Guy — Catherine reframes the hunt as finding the takers, not Hassan, and the abandoned team sets off for an Old Street café as the kidnap car jolts Hassan.

Lines worth keeping

“Black was recruited by Taverner. The kidnapping was a set-up. Only now it’s real, so Taverner’s looking for scapegoats.” — Jackson Lamb, The frame named: Black was the Park’s, not Slough House’s.

“You’re fucking useless, the lot of you.” — Jackson Lamb, The insult Catherine reads as a demand that they prove him wrong.

“He told us we’re useless because he wants us to prove him wrong.” — Catherine Standish, Her reading of Lamb, which sets the team moving.

Threads

  • Plants: Lamb’s key to the cemetery gates; River’s memory of where he saw Black — told off-page; Catherine’s uncharacteristic spark at the grave; Lamb eating a second sandwich while the others starve; The Park’s paper trail naming Black as Slough House’s man
  • Payoffs: Black’s recruitment by Taverner explains why the team is being framed; Hassan is Mahmud Gul’s nephew, which is why the kidnapping matters; Moody’s body may still be at Slough House; Lamb’s refusal to let the Park arrest them is given a motive
  • Continuity: Kay White already taken; Loy unaccounted for; Lamb drives an official-issue black SUV; Ho carries a laptop and a mobile dongle; Blake’s stone also commemorates his wife Catherine, with Defoe’s memorial beside it; The meeting happens before anywhere opens for breakfast
