Kay White
Who they are
A slow horse so quiet she is almost furniture in the early chapters — banished downstairs by Lamb for noise, present at both video screenings, saying nothing.
What they want
Unstated. That is the characterisation: she has learned that in this building, speaking is a liability.
Book 1 — Slow Horses
- C01 — Mentioned as having been sent downstairs by Lamb for making noise.
- C04–C05 — At the viewings; silent.
- C11 — To be collected from Tower Hamlets.
- C12 — Taken from her home by an unidentifiable man while River Cartwright watches from a stolen car and does nothing.
- C16 — The second witness whose statement Taverner wants co-signed.
- C17 — Dead; her desk stripped bare.
Tells
Silence, and the fact that nobody in Slow Horses can say what she did to get sent down. She is the cost of the Park’s housekeeping, counted in a single sentence.
Open questions
What she was offered, and whether she took it. The book does not let her speak, which is itself the finding.
