Roderick Ho
Who they are
The IT man at Slough House: monitor, laptop, dongle, and an attention that goes wherever it is not wanted. He was sent down for using Service surveillance to engineer a date — the pettiness of the offence is the point. He knows everyone’s passwords, including, reputedly, Lamb’s.
What they want
Access. Not power, not redemption: access. He is happiest inside a database that does not belong to him.
Book 1 — Slow Horses
- C01 — Arrives early to work out who is already inside the building.
- C02 — Trawls Home Office files for pleasure; remembers surveilling a woman from her building pass.
- C04–C05 — Identifies both hostage films as loops and traces the proxy chain; his office becomes the room where everyone watches.
- C12 — Spends the night dismantling the life of a driver who honked at him, then lets Min and Louisa in.
- C15 — Traces Roupell Street through a Civil Service sales portfolio and pulls Black’s personnel file, finding the legend Dermot Radcliffe still live.
- C16 — Hacks the hire-car firm and RoadWise through his contacts, fixing the Volvo in Epping Forest.
- C17 — Alone downstairs, walled in by pizza boxes, still trawling.
Book 2 — Dead Lions
- C01 — Sits in his jungly office guarding mug and territory: the house’s most proprietorial inmate.
- C02 — Refuses River outright — he’d kill me — then runs the footage anyway when Lamb orders it: selective cowardice.
- C05 — Catherine Standish takes his fake tasklist apart from his habits alone and buys his help thereafter; he is owned from here.
- C10 — Abandons the Shana scheme for her list of names and finds something in the results that gets him out of his chair.
- C11 — Brings Lamb the seventeen families of 1991 and, for once, leaves the room with nothing to add to the silence.
- C13 — Exposes the sleepers’ papered-over school records and the fake Pashkin profile; the day turns on his keyboard work.
- C14 — Runs until his lungs burn, then takes a cab to the Needle: the one chapter that asks his body to keep up.
- C16 — Asleep face-down on the desk, worn out by a single day of being useful.
Book 3 — Real Tigers
- C01 — Calls Louisa Guy ripe in a bar near the Barbican, takes Shirley Dander’s backhand, and holds Marcus Longridge to the evening by knowing about his casino sites.
- C02 — Sent to check the absence chart, then left behind when the others go out: his standing in the house.
- C05 — Traces Catherine’s dead phone and River’s scrambled one, and reads the block correctly.
- C07 — Wins a bet by shattering a lightbulb, then finds that Monteith and Judd were at school together.
- C09 — Maps Black Arrow’s properties and turns up the rented building north of High Wycombe with a bus in its yard.
- C10–C11 — Press-ganged into driving Lamb west, then left in a lay-by with a cup of coins and an instruction to act.
- C12–C13 — Drives the bus through the farmhouse door, is praised for the plan and sent for water.
- C14–C16 — Preens about the credit, runs the Dunn lookup, and is last seen rehearsing a line to Louisa.
Competence and absurdity arrive together in this book, and it declines to separate them.
Book 4 — Spook Street
- C01 — Arrives in a new leather jacket, pleased with his beard and his girlfriend, and rehearses a fantasy about Lamb agreeing to upgrade his equipment.
- C04 — Reads Lamb’s text on the stairs, tells Moira Tregorian and then Louisa Guy that River is dead, and is halfway through swapping River’s computer for a better one when Louisa stops him.
- C07 — Drinks something labelled smart water and is mocked for it while Shirley presents Cartwright’s French travel records.
- C08 — Jacks into the Park’s tracking system to tag Sam Chapman’s mobile and calls his movements down the phone; good at the work, and patronised for it while the snatch goes wrong.
- C09 — Sent to clear Lamb’s takeaway cartons and fetch replacements, and insulted by Chapman: the office gofer at the debrief that actually matters.
- C13 — Staying late to run an illegal money transfer for Kim on a Service machine, which is why he is in the building; he survives by hanging out of a window and comes out of hiding to ask about Marcus Longridge.
- C14 — Lifts Patrice’s mobile out of the pockets emptied onto River’s desk and is told to trace the single number called from it.
Tells
Speaks in system language; treats people as accounts with permissions. The novel never punishes him for it, which is one of its quieter jokes.
Open questions
How much of what Ho finds is fed to him. Whether his skills are being used by someone at the Park as well as by Slough House.
