Mahmud Gul
Who they are
A hardline general in Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence and Hassan Ahmed’s uncle — his mother’s brother, who never visited because he disapproved of her marriage. He appears in Slow Horses only as a fact everybody is calculating around.
What they want
Unstated, and that is the point: his reaction is the commodity the Service is trying to buy. A rescue would bank a favour with a man who can supply one.
Book 1 — Slow Horses
- C09 — Named by Lamb to Taverner as the reason the operation exists.
- C10 — Hassan, in the cellar, reassures himself that the kidnappers want ransom from his rich uncle rather than his head.
- C14 — Lamb explains the plan: rescue the nephew, bank the favour — and now British intelligence will have killed him on camera instead.
Tells
None on the page. He is a structural absence: the powerful relative whose existence reorganises everyone else’s behaviour.
Open questions
Whether he ever learns what happened, and what the Service offers him to stay quiet. Later books may take this up; this one does not.
