Slough House

James Webb

Who they are

The Regent’s Park officer known as Spider: River’s handler on the King’s Cross exercise, and the man who reversed the description that ruined him. Smooth, promoted, and entirely without remorse — he greets River as a favour and cannot understand why the favour is not appreciated.

What they want

To keep the assessment report buried and his career intact. He is a small antagonist with a large function: he is what the Service looks like from inside Slough House.

Book 1 — Slow Horses

Book 2 — Dead Lions

The man who sold the operation before it existed is wheeled out of it, and the only person who checks is the slow horse he helped ruin. It is a smaller punishment than the book’s other villains get, and reads more like an accident of architecture than a sentence.

Book 3 — Real Tigers

He does not appear, and there is no recovery. The page records only what other people say about a man who cannot answer.

Tells

The nickname, the suit, the assumption that competence is a matter of presentation. He is never punished in Slow Horses, which is the point.

Open questions

Why he kept the file at all — insurance, vanity, or an instruction. Whether his career survives the day.
