Book 1 2491 words POV: River Cartwright

Summary

Eight twenty on a Tuesday morning in January, River Cartwright stands in a packed King’s Cross on the last stage of his upgrading assessment, tailing a young man his handler Spider has described as wearing a white tee under a blue shirt. Two armed officers in black — the achievers — follow at a distance, and a coded tannoy is already repeating a request for Inspector Samms. River follows the target to the annexe platforms, gives the order to take him, and the man is flattened; but the rucksack holds books, a notepad, a pencil tin and a cheese sandwich. River realises the description was reversed, shouts at Spider over the radio, and runs for the Underground, where a northbound Victoria line train is crawling through the closed station. He reaches the far platform as a second man — blue tee under a white shirt, eighteen or nineteen — unbuttons his shirt over a belt of explosives and pulls the cord. River is half a second short. The station is evacuated; no one is killed, but a sixty-two-year-old man has a stroke, another breaks a leg, and three people have panic attacks. The inquiry finds sixteen basic errors in eight minutes, and only his grandfather’s influence keeps River in the Service at all — at Slough House.

Beats

  • C00S01 · River Cartwright — River halts the wrong man at King’s Cross — books, sandwich — realises Spider gave him the colours backwards, races to the tube platform, and is half a second late as the real target pulls the cord.

People

  • River Cartwright — Probationer on his upgrading assessment; causes the King’s Cross fiasco.
  • James Webb — River’s handler on the exercise; feeds him the reversed description.
  • David Cartwright — River’s grandfather, a retired officer whose remarks River hears unbidden.

Lines worth keeping

“Spider? You idiot, you called the wrong colours!” — River Cartwright, River names the error that ends his career, seconds after the wrong man has been cleared.

“Would Inspector Samms please report to the operations room.” — Station tannoy, A coded security alert, heard in fragments over the arrest and again over the bomb.

“But close wasn’t nearly enough.” — Narrator, Closes the chapter on River’s half-second miss.

Threads

  • Plants: The tannoy’s request for ‘Inspector Samms’ is a code telling staff a security alert is running.; The target’s rucksack lists as though heavy, but contains only books and a sandwich.; River notices the target’s stiff new jeans and files the question away for later.
  • Payoffs: Spider’s reversed description explains the wrong arrest and the wasted minutes.; The real target surfaces on the Underground in a blue tee under a white shirt.
  • Continuity: Tuesday, 8:20 a.m., January daylight; rain-free but grey.; River has three minutes before the Dogs arrive; the station is running again in twenty.; Casualties: one stroke (a man of 62), one broken leg, three panic attacks, not counting River’s.
