Question

What happens when? The novel is exact about hours and vague about dates, so the sequence has to be reconstructed from countdowns rather than calendars.

Evidence and reconstruction

The only explicit date marker in the book is C00’s “eight twenty, Tuesday morning” in January — the prologue, eight months before the main action. Everything after that is given in clock times and countdowns:

  • The hostage video goes up at 4 a.m. with a forty-eight-hour threat (C04).
  • The Voice of Albion goes public with a thirty-hour deadline by the evening of the pub scene (C08).
  • By C11 the deadline has “about twenty-six hours to run”.
  • Curly abandons the deadline in C15.

That arithmetic anchors the main action to roughly three days and nights, plus a coda “some time later”.

Phase Chapters Time cues in the text
Prologue C00 Tuesday, 8.20 a.m., January — eight months earlier
Day 1 C01–C03 morning sorting and the Max’s café swap; Catherine/Min/Louisa/Moody/Ho at home that evening; Hassan taken in Leeds that night; River’s Tonbridge supper and the video next morning
Day 2 C04–C08 4 a.m. video; early lunch (C05); Taverner’s committee and Moody’s recruitment (C06); 10 a.m. stakeout at Hobden’s flat and the shooting (C07); evening pub, Moody killed on the stairs (C08)
Night 2–3 C09–C13 Hobden at Judd’s “after midnight”; Lamb and Taverner by the canal; the Roupell Street discovery before dawn (C10); Regent’s Park “shortly after three” (C11); the collection run (C12); Standish collected before dawn (C13)
Day 3 C14–C16 Bunhill Fields before dawn; the Old Street café; Regent’s Park and Epping Forest
Coda C17 “Some time later” — Hobden’s death on the radio, the office rearranged

Caveats

  • C03 opens “Earlier that evening” and runs through to the next morning, so it overlaps C02 rather than following it. A straight chapter-order timeline is wrong for that pair.
  • The text’s “eight months” references in C01–C04 all describe River’s exile, not the novel’s elapsed time. Anyone reading them as a jump forward will build a false timeline — this is the one place where a first read commonly goes wrong.
  • The thirty-hour and forty-eight-hour deadlines do not reconcile cleanly. Either the group restates its own deadline, or the two clocks measure different things (the Service’s response window and the group’s own). The novel does not adjudicate, and C15 makes the question moot by abandoning the clock.
