Five of eighteen chapters are single-POV (C00, C03, C05, C07, C17), and four of those five are River’s.

Reading

The novel looks omniscient but is organised as a needle-and-thread structure: River’s single-POV chapters are the needle, and the multi-POV chapters are the thread that shows what he cannot see. The pattern is strict early on — C00 River, C01 ensemble, C03 River, C05 River, C07 River — so the reader learns to trust River’s chapters as the spine and to read the ensemble chapters as correction.

Two consequences the text exploits:

  1. The reader knows more than River for most of the book. We see Taverner’s recruitment of Moody (C06) before River does; we see the kidnappers’ kitchen (C11) before Lamb does. Suspense is generated by ignorance of outcome, not of fact.
  2. The villain’s POV is given freely. Taverner gets six chapters, including one alone with her committee and one alone with Loy. The novel does not hide her; it shows a competent person making each bad decision for an intelligible reason, which is more damning than concealment.

The distribution also does something quieter: it grants interiority to everyone the institution has written off — Moody, Kay White’s absence, Larry, Curly, Hassan. Only the genuinely powerful (Tearney) and the wholly venal (Judd gets one chapter, Webb one) are kept thin.

Confidence

High for the counts — they come from the chapter frontmatter, which was built from the extracted section boundaries. The interpretive claim about needle-and-thread is a reading, not a fact about the text.
