Slough House

Slow Horses

Open questions

Book 1

Question

What does this book deliberately leave unresolved — and which of those are hooks for later books rather than loose ends?

Evidence

  1. Who sent Sid to watch River. She tells him in C07 that she was posted to Slough House to keep an eye on him, which implies his fall was arranged. The novel never names the arranger. Jackson Lamb knows more than he says.
  2. What the O.B. authorised. C17 says David Cartwright sanctioned the killing of Charles Partner. It does not say on what grounds, or what Lamb was owed.
  3. How much Catherine knows. She found the body. The last chapter reframes her decade of sobriety as a sentence she is still serving. Whether she knows Lamb did it is left open — and is the book’s most important ambiguity.
  4. The contingency call. At the end of C09, Taverner telephones someone about a contingency. The novel never says who.
  5. What happened to Larry. He walks away in C16 and is not mentioned again.
  6. The bomb bluff’s consequences. Lamb claims a bomb in the SUV in C16 and the achievers empty the building. Nobody is shown being held responsible for the hoax.
  7. Struan Loy and Kay White. Both are turned or taken, both are dead by C17, and neither death is dramatised. The book withholds the killing of its own characters, which is either a deliberate flatness or an economy.

Reading

The unresolved items divide cleanly into two kinds. Items 1–4 are hooks: they are structured as questions a sequel can answer, and each is attached to a character who will still be present. Items 5–7 are economies: the novel declines to stage consequences it does not need, and the effect is a colder ending than a genre thriller usually risks.

The one I would flag as a genuine loose end rather than a hook is item 6. Lamb’s hoax should have an institutional cost, and the book does not give it one — unless the cost is precisely what C17 implies: he gets to stay, and staying is the punishment.

Confidence

Medium. Hooks are identifiable as craft; whether an omission is deliberate is a judgement, not a fact.
