Who they are
A former First Desk, dead before Slow Horses begins, found by Catherine Standish in his bath with a gun. Officially a suicide. In fact killed by Jackson Lamb on authority sanctioned by David Cartwright.
He exists in Slow Horses as a wound, not a character: the reason Standish is at Slough House, the leverage Taverner tries to use, and the last secret the book gives up.
What they want
Stated by others, never by him. He sold himself for money — the detail Lamb carries into the final chapter.

- C02 — Standish remembers finding the body, and the Dogs’ questions about her key to his house.
- C13 — Standish calls finding him “the first shoe”; she has been waiting for the second ever since.
- C15 — Named as the dead First Desk she was Girl Friday to.
- C16 — Taverner threatens to reopen his file to keep Standish quiet.
- C17 — Lamb’s reflection: Partner sold himself for money, Catherine found the body, and Lamb killed him.

None — he is entirely absent, which is how Slow Horses keeps him powerful.
Open questions
What “sold himself for money” bought, and whether Standish has known all along. The final page reframes a decade of her sobriety as a sentence she is still serving.
