Chapter 5

Book 4 Part One 12963 words POV: River Cartwright, Jackson Lamb, Catherine Standish, Claude Whelan, Louisa Guy, Diana Taverner, Marcus Longridge, Shirley Dander

Summary

On a train through France, River Cartwright studies Adam Lockhead’s passport and replays the night he crossed a line: after his grandfather shot an intruder in the bathroom, River fired a second bullet into the corpse’s face, left his own ID and phone in the dead man’s pocket, took the passport, wallet and Eurostar ticket, and deposited the old man with Catherine Standish. In her flat Lamb, having deliberately woken David Cartwright to test him, reconstructs the sequence and concludes the intruder was a professional sent for the old man; Catherine admits she searched River’s jacket, and the passport and ticket tell Lamb that River has gone to France. At Downing Street Claude Whelan, three days after the Westacres bomb, briefs his first COBRA on bomber Robert Winters, whose Semtex came from a 1990s armoury raid, then is summoned by Diana Taverner. At Slough House Lamb confirms River is alive, and JK Coe’s triangulation sends the slow horses after David Cartwright’s French connection. Taverner takes Whelan on a bus to tell him Winters was a ‘cold body’, a ready-made Service identity. River reaches Angevin, follows the café receipt to Le Ciel Bleu, learns the dead man was known locally as Bertrand of Les Arbres, finds the house burned out three nights earlier — and is shot at from the trees.

Beats

  • C05S01 · River Cartwright — River, travelling through France on Adam Lockhead’s passport, works over the night he stopped being an ordinary slow horse: he fired into Lockhead’s face, put his own ID and phone into the dead man’s pocket and took the passport, wallet and ticket. He has left his grandfather with Catherine and is now, by his own reckoning, in joe country, walking back the cat with only the vaguest sense of where he is going. The section establishes his state of mind rather than advancing events: he is awake, alone and certain he has stepped outside the rules.
  • C05S02 · Jackson Lamb — Lamb arrives at Catherine’s flat, shouts to startle David Cartwright awake, is ejected from the bedroom, and then works out in her sitting room that an assassin came for the old man and died for it. He argues River shot the corpse in the face because the missing mole above his lip would otherwise give the substitution away. Catherine admits she went through River’s jacket and produces the passport, euros and Eurostar ticket; the café receipt follows, and Lamb concludes that River has gone to France.
  • C05S03 · Claude Whelan — Whelan, travelling back from his first COBRA three days after the Westacres bomb, rehearses the case against Robert Winters: the CCTV trail to an Earls Court hostel, the passport and pay-as-you-go phone left under the pillow, the Semtex traced to a raid on a Wakefield armoury. The PM’s questions expose the gap — no conversion, no affiliation, no video message — which Whelan papers over with talk of a lair. Taverner’s phone call at the section’s end turns the briefing into a threat.
  • C05S04 · Louisa Guy — Coe, hood pulled back, argues from Lamb’s wording that River is alive; Louisa’s thrown stapler provokes a flash of something metal in his fist, and Marcus’s challenge draws the reply that Coe is not afraid of him. Lamb then confirms River is alive and in France, refuses to say where David Cartwright is, and adopts Coe’s triangulation — intended victim plus source of plot — as the team’s task: find the old man’s French connection. The section’s coda follows River off a bus into the French town, where the smell of a recent fire hangs over the square and he heads for the café named on the receipt.
  • C05S05 · Diana Taverner — Taverner engineers a meeting with no paper trail: she walks Whelan off Oxford Circus, pays cash for a bus, and tells him his COBRA briefing contained misinformation. She sketches the consequences — dereliction of duty, shortest-serving First Desk — and then delivers the fact that Robert Winters is one of ours, a cold body rather than an agent or an asset. The section withholds the explanation, which only arrives after the chapter has moved elsewhere.
  • C05S06 · Marcus Longridge — Marcus explains triangulation to Shirley in the simplest terms while reflecting that her temper has been marginally steadier of late. Shirley’s expired password delays her, then she looks up Molly Doran in the internal directory and, over Marcus’s misgivings about River’s earlier attempt to steal a file, dials the Park.
  • C05S07 · River Cartwright — In Le Ciel Bleu River’s French collapses, and the waitress’s incomprehension is rescued by a bearded customer who translates and then talks to him in English. The man says the lookalike was not English but a local, Bertrand, and that he came from Les Arbres, a big house not far away — though finding it is, he says, yes and no. River leaves with a name and a direction and with his story of a cousin still standing.
  • C05S08 · Shirley Dander — Molly Doran takes Shirley’s call, remembers her, refuses cooperation in principle, and makes clear she is intrigued; she also lets slip that she once sent JK Coe to Slough House. The section turns on the sound of Lamb and Moira Tregorian laughing together on the stairs, which Shirley converts into a wager: three guesses at what she heard, or Molly helps with her enquiries.
  • C05S09 · Claude Whelan — Taverner defines the cold-body programme — identities built through official channels over decades and kept current until needed — and explains that Winters’s passport was issued for a two-year-old. She admits she withheld this from Whelan before COBRA and justifies it by the lockdown that would have followed, then reveals that he signed the warrant holding Giti Rahman before he briefed the PM, which makes him complicit. She closes with the number: three cold bodies unaccounted for, so two more people are out there.
  • C05S10 · River Cartwright — River walks out to Les Arbres and finds a burned shell: arson three nights earlier, the house empty, no bodies recovered, tyre tracks and melted white goods in the mud. He accepts that any evidence is ash and decides to go back to Angevin for a local paper, a church or a bar — some thread to pull — while wondering whether he is investigating the attempt on his grandfather or avoiding the old man’s decline. On the way out a man steps from the trees with a single-barrelled gun, fires, and the section ends.

People

  • River Cartwright — on the run in France on Adam Lockhead’s passport, retracing the dead man’s journey.
  • David Cartwright — River’s grandfather, a former Service legend, confused and asleep in Catherine’s flat; he shot the intruder.
  • Catherine Standish — harbours David Cartwright and hands Lamb the contents of River’s pockets.
  • Jackson Lamb — reconstructs the killing and works out that River has gone to France.
  • Claude Whelan — First Desk, newly in post, briefs COBRA and is then levered by Taverner.
  • Diana Taverner — tells Whelan that Winters was a cold body and that three identities are missing.
  • Louisa Guy — presses Lamb about River and confronts Coe.
  • Marcus Longridge — challenges Coe and explains triangulation to Shirley.
  • Shirley Dander — telephones Molly Doran for records.
  • JK Coe — hooded new arrival who argues River is alive and supplies the triangulation plan.
  • Moira Tregorian — the new arrival seen laughing with Lamb on the stairs.
  • Molly Doran — keeps personnel records at the Park; takes Shirley’s call and accepts a wager.
  • Giti Rahman — the analyst who found the cold-body link, now held by the Dogs.
  • Ingrid Tearney — Whelan’s predecessor, whose messy departure cleared the way for him.
  • Charles Partner — former head of the Service from Operations, secretly paid by the Soviets.
  • Bertrand — the name the café customer gives for the English-looking local from Les Arbres.

Places

  • Slough House — MI5’s dumping ground, where the slow horses are briefed by Lamb.
  • Regent’s Park — MI5 headquarters, referred to as the Park; its interest River fears.
  • Westacres — the shopping centre bombed three days before the COBRA meeting.
  • Les Arbres — the big house near Angevin that Lockhead came from, burned out three nights earlier.

Lines worth keeping

“Because, bizarre as it sounds, he’s now a joe in the field. And you don’t blow a joe’s cover.” — Jackson Lamb, explaining to Catherine why he identified the wrong body as River’s.

“Robert Winters—he’s one of ours.” — Diana Taverner, on the bus, telling Whelan that the Westacres bomber was a Service creation.

“River wouldn’t have come if he’d had anywhere else to go.” — Catherine Standish, justifying to Lamb why she took the Cartwrights in at four in the morning.

“When you lived on Spook Street you wrapped up tight: watched every word, guarded every secret.” — Narrator, River’s reflection on his grandfather’s phrase for tradecraft.

Threads

  • Plants: Les Arbres burned three nights before River reaches it, with no bodies found — what happened to the commune is unresolved.; Taverner says three cold bodies are unaccounted for; only Winters is named here, leaving two identities to be identified later.; Something metal glints in JK Coe’s fist when Louisa startles him, and his Psych Eval past is left unexplained.; Lamb refuses to say where David Cartwright is, offering only that he is safe.; David Cartwright calls Catherine ‘Rose’, underlining how unreliable his memory has become.; The café customer’s ‘yes and no’ about finding Les Arbres anticipates the ruined house.; A man with a single-barrelled gun fires at River as the chapter closes; whether he is hit is left hanging.; Moira Tregorian has taken over Catherine’s old office, and her laughter with Lamb is treated as unprecedented.; Giti Rahman is held by the Dogs, a lever Taverner uses on Whelan.; Lamb mentions the Park’s ‘enhanced retirement package’, the rumour that former officers are killed.
  • Payoffs: River’s second shot into Lockhead’s face is explained: it hides the mole that would expose the substitution.; Lamb’s false identification of River’s body is explained by the rule that you do not blow a joe’s cover.; The café receipt taken from Lockhead’s pocket becomes River’s only lead.; Catherine’s flat functions as the safe house River counted on.; The Westacres bombing, established before this chapter, is given a name, a route and a source of explosives.
  • Continuity: The COBRA meeting is three days after the Westacres bomb; the bomb was in January.; River brought David Cartwright to Catherine’s at about four in the morning and left before dawn.; Lockhead’s passport is British, in the name Adam Lockhead, with euros and the return half of a Eurostar ticket.; The café receipt is five days old, from before the New Year, for two bottled beers and a steak-frites.; River carries the return half of a Eurostar ticket, then takes a train from Paris to Poitiers and a bus to Angevin on the river Anglin.; Whelan is First Desk and Chief Exec; Taverner is his subordinate, not his equal.; Whelan signed the warrant authorising the Dogs to hold Giti Rahman before briefing COBRA.; Lamb claims his Christmas break began last September.; The Semtex came from an HMRC seizure off the Cumbrian coast in ’92 and was stolen from a Wakefield police armoury three years later.; River has not yet used his credit card, and knows it will put him back on the map once he does.
