Slough House

Nick Duffy

Who they are

Head of the Dogs — the Service’s internal enforcers — and the man who does the Park’s physical work with a weary professionalism. He is not cruel; he is procedure in a coat, which is worse for the people he collects.

What they want

A quiet Service, and to be on the winning side of whatever the Second Desk decides. He manages both by never asking a question he does not want answered.

Book 1 — Slow Horses

Book 2 — Dead Lions

The cleanest example of the type: a man who is exactly as thorough as he was asked to be, and no more. The vetting was signed off under Taverner’s pressure, so the failure will settle on him rather than on her.

Book 3 — Real Tigers

He is destroyed without being killed: alive at the end with limited brain function, and of no further use to anyone.

Tells

The flat institutional voice; the way he never repeats an order he did not receive. He is Slow Horses’s portrait of a man who survives by being exactly as responsible as required.

Open questions

How much he knows about Moody’s death, and whether his deference to Taverner will survive the Fiasco file.
