Epping Forest
What it is
The wood outside London where the hire car’s sat nav puts the kidnappers, and where Slow Horses’s hostage plot resolves — not in a Service operation but in trees, between three men who have stopped agreeing with each other.
Book 1 — Slow Horses
- C16 — Roderick Ho cracks RoadWise and fixes the Volvo here. Larry deserts; Curly hits Hassan Ahmed with the axe handle; Hassan runs, trips Curly, takes the axe, and spares him.
Why it matters
The rescue the Service spent the book failing to mount is performed by the victim. The forest is deliberately undramatic: no raid, no achievers, no cameras. It is the novel’s answer to the Park’s theatre.
Open questions
Whether anyone official ever reaches the scene. The last chapter is set back in London and does not say.
