The cellar
What it is
Where Hassan Ahmed is held: damp, dark, with a door at the top of the stairs and a kitchen above it. Not a dungeon — a room in an ordinary house, which is what makes it frightening.
Book 1 — Slow Horses
- C02 — Hassan wakes bound and hooded here.
- C06 — He drifts out of his body and rehearses a comedy routine.
- C08 — He talks himself towards calm, then loses it.
- C10 — He is dragged upstairs to the kitchen, understanding he will die there rather than in the cellar.
Why it matters
The novel cuts to the cellar at regular intervals, and those cuts are its clock. Every return measures how much time is left, and every return narrows the space: cellar, kitchen, boot of a car, trees.
Open questions
Whose house it is, and how Alan Black acquired it — the Roupell Street property turns out to be a Civil Service sales portfolio, squatted without a footprint.
