Skylarks
What it is
The care home where David Cartwright spends his last year, and where he dies. It is not a Service facility: the Service long ago outsourced “any such frivolities” (London Rules, C01), so one of its most senior retired officers ends up in a private home with a view of winter hills. The name does not appear again after the funeral; what happens to the room is not recorded.
Book 5 — London Rules
- C01 — River Cartwright drives out before breakfast to find his grandfather already “down the twilit corridors of his own mind”, surfacing only now and then to sniff the air like an elderly badger.
Book 6 — Joe Country
- C01 — The room the O.B. is moved into is “purpose-built to die in”; River keeps vigil from before dawn, texts Louisa Guy, and dozes, so that the death happens without his knowing. The machines change their note; the nurse arrives; River kisses the old man’s forehead.
Tells
The home is one of the series’ quiet jokes about the institution: the Service’s most senior survivor is housed by strangers, and the only person at the deathbed is a grandson it has already exiled.
