Max's cafe
What it is
A café whose tables are “always packed too close”, in optimistic preparation for a rush of custom that does not come. Owned or run by Max, who turns up the television for Robert Hobden when the news breaks.
Book 1 — Slow Horses
- C01 — Hobden’s morning routine: keys, phone, wallet, and a keyring that is really a memory stick laid on the table. Sid Baker spills cappuccino over his newspapers and swaps the stick.
- C04 — Hobden hears the television report here and leaves his newspapers behind.
Why it matters
It is Slow Horses’s demonstration of how surveillance actually works: not a clandestine approach on a dark street, but a woman with a coffee cup in a café where the tables are too close together.
Open questions
Whether Max knows what his café is used for. The text does not say, and the ambiguity is characteristic.
