Who they are
The cell member who is already dead when the book’s action starts. C06 introduces him as Danny’s memory of a living man and a cling-filmed body in the back of a van, wrapped “tight as they could, in what came to hand”. The official cause is a bad fall: he went through a big window and landed neck first, which Shin calls an accident and the reader is invited to doubt.
He is the first demonstration of what the cell does with failure — and the measure of how strange Shin’s mercy towards Kim Park is by comparison.
Book 5 — London Rules
- C06 — His body is in the van; Danny remembers him alive the day before.
- C07 — The body is still in the van as the cell leaves Slough.
- C11 — Referred to in the running argument about Kim: Shin had killed Joon for less.
- C13 — Part of the cell’s history as the day closes in.
Open questions
How he died, and whether the window was an accident. The cell’s own account is Shin’s, and Shin is the person the book leaves least explained.
