Chapter 15

Book 4 Part Two 5468 words POV: Claude Whelan, Narrator

Summary

Twenty-four hours after the attack, with the rain finally stopped, Claude Whelan climbs to Lamb’s office — the first time a First Desk has visited Slough House. Whelan gives an unofficial account of Frank Harkness’s debrief: Frank was taken alive against Diana Taverner’s preference, Les Arbres was originally funded and resourced by the Service, and the Cuckoo programme trained young men who believed their own cover stories, one of whom was Yves, travelling as Robert Winters, who turned a dry run into Westacres. Whelan concedes that Harkness slipped the leash within ten minutes of being back on the street, and that the Service intends to suppress its own involvement. Lamb, using Whelan’s old ‘Galahad’ collect call after a kerb-crawling arrest in London Fields and Moira Tregorian’s likely memory of it, forces him to sign off a ten-year active-agent payment for Marcus Longridge’s widow instead of the standard five. Whelan offers Lamb a desk at the Park and is told to fuck off. Catherine, listening from the next room, raises Coe’s shooting of an unarmed prisoner and gets a defence rather than a plan; Lamb asks whether she is coming back and receives no plain answer before she leaves.

Beats

  • C15S01 · Claude Whelan — Whelan visits the emptied Slough House and hears Lamb out on the terms of their conversation: nothing official, no recording, and the truth about the Service’s funding of Les Arbres kept out of the report. Whelan describes the Cuckoo programme, the European dry runs, Yves/Robert Winters and the early-nineties armoury cache, then admits Harkness is at liberty again after slipping his escort. Lamb uses Whelan’s ‘Galahad’ rescue and Tregorian’s transfer to force a ten-year active-agent payment for Marcus Longridge’s widow, and rejects Whelan’s offer of a desk at the Park. Catherine, who has been listening, presses him on Coe’s killing of Patrice and on whether she is being asked back, and leaves without settling it.
  • C15S02 · Narrator — The narrator follows Lamb down through the emptied building, past Louisa’s cleaned carpet, the room River now shares with Coe, Ho lying to Kim on the phone and the half-repainted wall behind Marcus’s desk. Shirley is out dancing, not managing her anger but deliberately cultivating it; Coe notices his hands are steady. Lamb lets himself out of the back door, looks up at his own lit window and walks away unseen.

People

  • Claude Whelan — First Desk, who comes to Slough House to trade information and is blackmailed into the Longridge payment.
  • Catherine Standish — listens from the next room, challenges Lamb over Coe, and leaves without answering whether she will return.
  • Frank Harkness — debriefed and ‘cooperative’, then at liberty again after slipping his escort.
  • Diana Taverner — wanted Harkness shot rather than taken, and still has to countersign Whelan’s decisions.
  • Sam Chapman — cited by Lamb as a good soldier owed something, alongside the damage to his carpets.
  • Moira Tregorian — her transfer to Slough House is recast as Whelan sidelining a potential witness; she is now retiring on medical grounds.
  • Patrice — discussed only as a body with holes in it, whose killing is to be recorded as self-defence.
  • JK Coe — described by Lamb as possibly working out, and by Catherine as needing arrest or help.
  • Shirley Dander — named among the staff Lamb would be left with, and shown in the closing section dancing out her fury.
  • Louisa Guy — asleep early in her office, her carpet scrubbed where Sam Chapman fell.
  • River Cartwright — absent, with radical new information to absorb; his room is now Coe’s too.
  • David Cartwright — judged by Lamb to have passed the point of no return into mental decline.
  • Yves — the Cuckoo subject who carried out Westacres.

Places

  • Slough House — empty but for Lamb, its doors propped against walls and its stains still in place.
  • Regent’s Park — where Whelan spent the day and where he would rather the meeting had been held.
  • Les Arbres — Harkness’s training operation, funded and resourced by the Service.
  • Westacres — the operation that went live and put a dent in Harkness’s average.

Lines worth keeping

“Legend doesn’t do this place justice.” — Claude Whelan, arriving in Lamb’s office at Slough House.

“There’s absolutely no part of this in which we come out looking good, is there?” — Jackson Lamb, after Whelan admits Harkness is at large again.

“He shot an unarmed man, Jackson! Who was tied to a radiator!” — Catherine Standish, challenging Lamb over Coe’s killing of Patrice.

“So. Are you coming back?” — Jackson Lamb, asking Catherine whether she will return to Slough House.

Threads

  • Plants: Frank Harkness is at large with comrades still out there, and Whelan’s ‘I’m sure we’ll meet again soon’ leaves both men’s futures open.; Shirley is not managing her anger but letting it take root until she can cut it loose.; Coe’s position is unresolved: Lamb says he might work out, which the narrator notes may not be a compliment.; Catherine neither accepts nor refuses the offer to return; her coat and her silence leave it open.; River has still to absorb that he owes his existence to Harkness’s scheme and his upbringing to David Cartwright’s, which the narrator calls a topic for another day.
  • Payoffs: The Service’s original funding and resourcing of Les Arbres, and the early-nineties armoury raid, are confirmed.; Yves is identified as the Westacres bomber and Robert Winters as his false identity.; Whelan’s ‘Galahad’ collect call and the London Fields arrests are used as leverage to force the Longridge payment.; Coe’s shooting of Patrice is converted into an account of self-defence, closing the question of what happens to the prisoner.; Moira Tregorian’s posting to Slough House is explained as Whelan moving a possible witness out of the way.
  • Continuity: The chapter opens twenty-four hours after the attack on Slough House; the rain has stopped.; Longridge’s death-in-service payment is five years’ salary standard, ten under the active-agent increment Lamb insists on, due by the end of the week or early the next.; Catherine’s office is the room opposite Lamb’s; it is dark during Whelan’s visit and she leaves at the end still not re-engaged.; Coe now shares River’s office at Slough House: ‘River Cartwright’s room; now JK Coe’s room too’; the same office is called ‘Coe and Cartwright’s office’ earlier in the chapter.; Whelan is First Desk; Diana Taverner remains senior enough that he needs her goodwill to sign things.; Moira Tregorian is retiring on medical grounds.; The text does not say whether Harkness was released or escaped; Whelan only says he slipped the leash about ten minutes after hitting the street.
