Question

What is the book’s chronology, and where does the text actually pin a date?

Evidence

When Event Chapter
Monday 1 January, 8:47 a.m. A tweet advertises a flash mob at Westacres, a shopping centre on London’s western fringe. C03
Tuesday 2 January, 3:04 p.m. The bomber appears at Westacres and detonates in the fountain hub; “upwards of forty” are killed. Samit Chatterjee is among them. C00, C03
Thursday 4 January David Cartwright fixes the date himself. Slough House wakes to an empty Lamb’s office and no Catherine; the Westacres bomb was “two days earlier”. C01
That evening River Cartwright drinks with Louisa Guy, then takes the train to Kent. He finds the old man does not believe he is River. At 21:03 David’s panic button is pressed; the first responder arrives at 21:49. C02–C03
Friday 5 January, just after 2 a.m. Jackson Lamb is woken and drives to Kent. The body in the bathroom has no face; Lamb identifies it as River by hair, rings and a mole. C03
7:30 a.m. Claude Whelan’s first COBRA, on Westacres — the third day after the bomb. C03, C05
That morning Slough House learns of the death by text; Lamb tells Catherine Standish in person; Diana Taverner has Giti Rahman collected. C04
That day River crosses France on Adam Lockhead’s passport; Lamb works out he is alive; Taverner tells Whelan about cold bodies. C05
That afternoon River reaches the burned house at Les Arbres; Patrice is ordered to try again; Flyte interviews Catherine. C06
That evening River reaches London on the Lockhead passport, is intercepted by Emma Flyte, and is taken by Patrice. C10
That night The dazzle ship, Frank’s claim, the shoot-to-kill order; Patrice attacks Slough House; Marcus Longridge and Sam Chapman are killed. C12–C13
The same night River is thrown into the Thames and pulled out by Louisa; Frank is arrested on a maintenance platform; Coe shoots Patrice. C14
Saturday 6 January Twenty-four hours after the attack, Whelan visits Slough House and gives Lamb the unofficial account. C15

Reading

The book runs five days, and the prologue is a separate day. From the bomb on Tuesday 2 January to Whelan’s visit on Saturday 6 January is four clear days and two nights; the present-tense action of C01–C15 covers roughly seventy-two hours. It is the tightest span in the first four books — Dead Lions spread over six weeks, Real Tigers over a week.

“The first working day of the year” and 2 January are the same day. C00 calls the bombing the first working day of the year; C03 dates the advertising tweet to Monday the first, with the event the next day. Monday 1 January was New Year’s Day, a public holiday, so the centre’s first working day was Tuesday the second. The two statements are consistent; the apparent contradiction disappears once the bank holiday is counted.

The 46-minute gap is the book’s first fact. David’s panic button was pressed at 21:03 and the first responder arrived at 21:49 — the delay Lamb spends the rest of the chapter insulting Flyte about. It is also his third call in three weeks, which is how the Park already has a file on the house.

France happens in one day. River leaves London on the morning of 5 January and is back at St Pancras by early evening, having crossed to Paris, trained to Poitiers, bussed to Angevin, walked to Les Arbres and back, met Victor and Natasha, and used his credit card. The compression is the point: the past he is investigating is a twenty-five-year-old one, and he gives it an afternoon.

The last two chapters run at different speeds. C13 covers perhaps twenty minutes in twenty sections; C14 covers the same night in ten; C15 covers a single conversation the following day in two. The book slows down as it ends, which is the reverse of a thriller’s usual acceleration.

Discrepancies worth keeping

  • C01 has David “fix the date as 4 January” while C03 has the bomb on the second; both are internal to their scenes and neither is contradicted, but a reader counting days from the prologue will find one day unaccounted for.
  • Whelan’s COBRA is “three days after the Westacres bomb” in C05 and “that morning” in C10; the two statements place it on 5 January, which is four days after 1 January but three after the bomb itself.
  • C06 has Bertrand “assumed rather than confirmed” dead; C10 has Patrice told “Bertrand is alive”. The second is Patrice’s belief (and Frank’s incentive to send him after River), not a fact the narrator endorses.
